The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed veteran NHL defenseman Brendan Smith to a one year contract for the rest of the 2025-26 season.
He’s become a journeyman defenseman in the latter years of his NHL career, and his latest stop has just been confirmed, as the Columbus Blue Jackets have signed veteran defenseman Brendan Smith to a one year, two way contract.
Smith had been signed to a professional tryout agreement and had an assist in 11 games with the American Hockey League affiliate Cleveland Monsters so far this year.
Smith played last year with the Dallas Stars and had six points (1G, 5A) in 36 games played.
The move will give the Blue Jackets some valuable depth on the blue line.
Brendan Smith Has Played Over 700 Career NHL Games With Multiple Teams
Smith was taken by the Detroit Red Wings with the 27th overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, and would go on to play three years at the University of Wisconsin before starting his career with Detroit’s AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Smith would play in a Red Wings sweater for multiple years until he was traded in 2017 to the New York Rangers, where he would sign a four year contract that summer to remain in place.
Since then, Smith has played for the Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils and Dallas Stars.
He was not signed during this summer and had to wait until he was given an invitation by the Blue Jackets to attend their training camp on a PTO basis in late August.
In 726 career NHL games, Smith has 144 points (39G, 105A).
