Edmonton Oilers get 2 players back from injury at practice, test new lines

While Nuge and Kapanen got back on the ice, they weren’t rotated in to the group’s main line combinations just yet. For the most part the two skated as a 5th line, indicating they won’t play the Oilers next game tomorrow vs. Dallas.

However there was some hint of where they might play when both players are cleared to return.

According to reporters at practice, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins rotated in on the first line in place of Matthew Savoie, and Kapanen took reps on the third line as well. Trent Frederic would be the player most likely to be demoted from the 3rd line.Jake Walman is still off the ice entirely, and there’s no definitive date set for his return.

UPDATE: Speaking to reporters after practice, Oilers coach Knoblauch confirmed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is questionable for tomorrow’s game, while providing an update on the rest of their injuries.

Savoie had a solid run of play with the top line, but still just didn’t produce enough offence to keep the spot locked down. His 200-foot game has earned some trust by the coach, but Savoie is still kept to an ice time average of 14:51, and he’s only got 6 points this season. He should be bumped down the lineup, but he’ll continue to improve.

Getting this roster fully healthy will be a major boost to their forward depth, and could potentially help with their struggles to generate 5v5 offence. The next few games need to be turning point for the Oilers season.
