For the second-straight game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Philadelphia Flyers were shut out on Monday night, losing 3-0. Philadelphia’s record dropped to 11-7-3 with the loss.

The Flyers struggled mightily out of the gate on Monday. Nick Deslauriers looked to spark some life into the Flyers with his heavyweight bout vs. Curtis Douglas. However, nothing came from it.

Tampa Bay did not have its best stuff on Monday night either. However, the Lightning are a great hockey team. What do great hockey teams do? Well, they capitalize on the opposition’s mistakes. That’s what the Lightning did vs. the Flyers on Monday.

The Lightning scored three times during the game, one in each period. Its first goal, Tampa Bay, was set up by a relatively easy zone entry by Brandon Hagel. Without much contest from the Flyers’ back check, Hagel skated into the zone, passed the puck off, then bodied Emil Andrae in front for the easy deflection score.

The Lightning’s second-period goal came on an odd-man rush. It was an easy defensive zone exit for Tampa, with the Flyers’ forwards dragging far behind the play. When you have Hagel, Nikita Kucherov, and Anthony Cirelli on an odd-man rush, it’s dangerous.

Andrae was caught out of position by Hagel, who displayed excellent patience and took the puck to the net. Sam Ersson was expecting the shot, but instead, Hagel found Cirelli for the easy score.

There was no real comeback attempt in the third. The Flyers were struggling to generate any real chances. When playing against a future Hall of Famer in Andrei Vasilevskiy, you have to be on your game, and the Flyers were not.

The Flyers would eventually pull Sam Ersson, but it would come to no avail. Instead, Hagel would find the back of the empty net to cap off his three-point night. Tampa Bay would complete the 3-0 shutout against Philadelphia.
