This isn’t the 1970s when settling scores played a much bigger role NHL competition than it does today. But you should make a mental note that the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings will meet again on March 8.

The Devils beat Detroit 4-3 Monday in New Jersey, and tempers were boiling by game’s end.

Devils-Red Wings ill will goes back to last season when Detroit’s Michael Rasmussen flattened Jack Hughes on a reverse check on an empty-net goal.

On Monday, tempers flaired when J.T. Compher took a penalty for a heavy hit on Devils captain Nico Hischier. Compher later fought Stefan Noesen for throwing that check.

In the third period, the Red Wings took exception to Jonas Siegenthaler’s hit that knocked Raymond to the ice. It took him some time to get up. No penalty was called.

“I was joining the rush and turned around. I wanted to change and ran into him. And I mean, it wasn’t a very hard [hit],” Siegenthaler said. “I would say. But you know, he can act however he wants. I don’t think it was bad.”

It’s clear Detroit players don’t accept that version because when the buzzer sounded to end the game, everyone was involved in pushing, shoving and chirping on both sides.

Mark you calendars.
