Toronto Maple Leafs

Captain Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies and Nicolas Roy are all in grey sweaters ahead of Leafs practice, which signals a likely extra player/scratch.

Matthews has missed the last five games with a lower-body injury he picked up on Nov. 11 against the Boston Bruins.

The 28-year-old has nine goals and 14 points in 17 games this season.

Knies, 23, has not suited up since Nov. 15 against the Chicago Blackhawks due to a lower-body injury. He has five goals and 22 points in 19 games this season.

Roy was on the ice for Leafs practice on Monday but has not played since getting hurt against the Blackhawks. He has one goal and three assists in 19 appearances this season.

Defenceman Jake McCabe is back on the ice for the first time since getting hurt in Saturday’s loss to the Montreal Canadiens. He departed the game early with an upper-body injury and did not skate on Monday.

Head coach Craig Berube said he expects McCabe to play on Wednesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Defenceman Zach Werenski as well as forwards Kirill Marchenko, Sean Monahan and Mathieu Olivier are not on the ice for practice this morning.

Werenski and Olivier were both injured in last night’s game against the Washington Capitals and left the game with upper-body injuries.

Werenski played through the first two periods but did not come out for the third before being ruled out. He played 17:36 with four shots and a block. The 28-year-old has seven goals and 21 points this season.

Olivier skated for only 4:49 before departing the game with the injury. He has three goals and nine points in 22 games this season.

Marchenko missed last night’s game after he departed the team’s morning skate halfway through with an apparent injury.

He has eight goals and 22 points in 22 games this season.

Blue Jackets team insider Jeff Svoboda says veteran defenceman Brendan Smith, who signed a one-year, two-way contract yesterday, has joined the team.

Smith started the season skating with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. He had one assist in 11 games.

He spent the 2024-25 season with the Dallas Stars, scoring one goal with five assists in 32 games.
