Detroit Red Wings defenceman Ben Chiarot has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for butt-ending New Jersey Devils defenceman Simon Nemec.

The incident with just over six minutes remaining in the third period in Monday’s game. With the two teams engaged in a scrum of the Devils’ net, Chiarot speared Nemec. Chiarot was not penalized on the play as the Devils won the game 4-3.
Chiarot, 34, has two goals and six points in 23 games while averaging 20:57 of ice time with Detroit this season, his fourth with the team.
The Hamilton, Ont., native has skated in 746 career NHL games, scoring 47 goals with 176 points, split between the Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens, Florida Panthers and Red Wings.
