The good news for the Bruins is they have reaffirmed that they’ve got another goal-scoring threat beyond David Pastrnak in Morgan Geekie.
The bad news? Right now, Geekie is the only player who is scoring goals regularly.
As they try to break even in their four-game road trip on Wednesday against the Islanders, the Bruins have scored six goals in the first three games and Geekie has scored five of them. Mikey Eyssimont is the only play other than Geekie to score a goal on the trip, during which an overtime win in Los Angeles was sandwiched between losses in Anaheim and San Jose.
The goal drought as even affected Pastrnak. While he’s got five assists in his last five games – including a beauty on Geekie’s goal in San Jose – and leads the team in scoring 11-18-27, he is without a goal in his last five games.
At Tuesday’s practice, coach Marco Sturm went back with the Czech line of Matej Blumel (a healthy scratch in San Jose after his turnover led to a shorthanded goal in LA), Pavel Zacha and Pastrnak, while a second line consisted of Marat Khusnutdinov, Elias Lindholm and Geekie.
Sturm told reporters after practice at UBS Arena that the lines are subject to change.
“That’s for right now. We’ll see. We’re going to wake up (Wednesday) and see if we still like it,” he said.
At this point, he might as well give it another shot, what with the lack of production. It would behoove them to create two scoring lines. He tried separating Pastrnak and Geekie first in LA and it at least produced a 2-1 OT win.
On Sunday in San Jose, Sturm tried it again but, after being shut out through the first 40 minutes, abandoned it in the third period, reuniting Geekie and Pastrnak and the pair combined on a goal after an urgent shift.
One can also reasonably hope that Elias Lindholm will be a little better as well. After missing almost a month with a knee injury, he was a hair behind the play in his return game in San Jose. They also could use more data on Blumel, who is pointless in three NHL games this year but had scored 70 goals in his last two seasons in the AHL with the Texas Stars.
Geekie has been a great story for the B’s this year, building off his 33-goal campaign last year to be among the top goal scorers of the NHL this season. And Sturm sees more room for growth there.
“That’s the nice part about him. There’s definitely room (for more),” said Sturm. “Does he score a lot of goals already? Yes, but there’s still a lot of stuff in his game, especially in the O-zone where he can explore a little more the offensive side of his game. That’s the nice part for me as a coach as well. You see it and that’s a guy who wants it, who wants to learn.”
But the B’s could also use a little more production from someone not named Geekie, too.
Steeves checking in
Alex Steeves was moved to the fourth line left wing with Sean Kuraly and Eyssimont. Steeves has been a scorer at the AHL level – he had 36 goals last season with the Toronto Marlies – but Sturm sees him more as a bottom-six player at this level, one who can occasionally bump up.
“He’s a guy that I think coaches trust. I know he scored a lot of goals in the past but I see him here, if he wants to play in this lineup, as more of a checker,” said Sturm. “That means he’s doing the dirty work and I think he’s been pretty good. I’ve also trusted him on the (penalty kill). We don’t have enough. He did a good job jumping in the last two or three games. At the end of the day, that’s what keeps him in the lineup, too. We’ve just got to understand that.”
The 25-year-old Steeves, whose play no doubt played a part in John Beecher becoming expendable, is well aware that his ticket to regular NHL duty is his versatility.
“It’s definitely been a good opportunity that I’ve tried to make the most of,” said Steeves. “It’s been really fun being a part of this team and play in different roles. I’m just trying to soak it in and grow every day. There are highs and lows and I’m just trying to put my best foot forward and really get more and more comfortable.”
Loose pucks
Jeffrey Viel, who has been out since banging his head on the ice in a fight with Radko Gudas in Anaheim last Wednesday, was back on the ice on Tuesday in Elmont, N.Y. … The Islanders have won seven of nine games but, like everyone else, they’re banged up. Alexander Romanov is out for the rest of the regular season with a shoulder injury he suffered on a scary hit from Mikko Rantanen last week, while Jean-Gabriel Pageau is out with an upper body injury.
