The Washington Capitals will celebrate Alex Ovechkin hitting the 900-goal and 1,500-game milestones in a pregame ceremony before puck drop against the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night. Ovechkin is the only player in NHL history to score 900 or more goals, and he is only the eighth player in NHL history to play in 1,500 or more games for the same team.
All fans in attendance will receive an oversized Alex Ovechkin head glued to a popsicle stick, celebrating the most iconic moments of his career.
Ovechkin spoke about the milestones and his excitement for the ceremony after the team’s morning skate.
Q: Obviously a lot of people really excited about this celebration tonight. Earlier this year, we were talking about “The Great Chase,” 895 goals. Now you’re at 900. What does it mean? How does it feel? And how do you feel about celebrating with not only your teammates and fans, but your family tonight?
Alex Ovechkin: Yeah, obviously it feels pretty special. A special moment. No one in history done it. To be first guy to score 900, it’s pretty special moment and obviously we’re going to celebrate with the teammates. Most important thing, like, my mom here, my wife, kids, and yeah, it’s going to be special moment.
Q: What did it mean to do 900 at home and now the celebration here from the whole fans? What’s it mean to you?
Alex Ovechkin: Yeah, it’s history, it’s lots of moments happen. And how I said, like to be able to be number one all of all time, it’s a special moment and I’m happy like we’re going to do that tonight and yeah, we gonna have a great time.
Q: How does it feel to inspire? I don’t know if you’ve seen this picture before, but obviously, this is one of your teammates right here. But what does it mean to see pictures like this and know that these people have been looking up to you for a long time?
Alex Ovechkin: Yeah, it’s a great feeling. You know, it’s nice to be part of that success with hockey-wise, this area and be part of it. I’m happy that kids start learning hockey here in this area and you can see how it grows. It grows fast and it’s special.
Q: 900 goals in your career, you know, passing through the second quarter, probably on time for this list. Has it sunk in yet what you’ve done over your 20 years?
Alex Ovechkin: Not really, I’m still playing. And as I said before, when you’re still a hockey player, you don’t think about it too much because you’re still playing. But when you’re going to be done, yeah, you’re going to relax, you’re going to talk to your friends, to your family about it. And it’s going to be a good moment.
