The San Jose Sharks visit the best team in the NHL in a measuring stick game that will show how well San Jose stacks up against the Colorado Avalanche. San Jose has already done something that only a few teams in the National Hockey League have done to date and that’s beat the Avs, who have a 16-1-5 record and an .841 points percentage. The Sharks won 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 1. That game happened at SAP Center when Mackenzie Blackwood had just returned to the net for the Avalanche. This time, Blackwood is expected to be in the net again, but without all of the rust.
The Avalanche has outscored opponents by 38 goals in the first 22 games of the season. Colorado is also on a nine-game win streak. The team’s top scorer is Nathan MacKinnon, who also leads the league in scoring. MacKinnon has 37 points, three more than the next guy on the list, Macklin Celebrini. MacKinnon also leads the league in goals scored with 17. Celebrini is third on the list with 14.
On the backend for the Avs, it’s Cale Makar leading the way. Makar leads all NHL defensemen with 9 goals and 20 assists for 29 points. In the net, there’s the one-two punch of Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood. Blackwood has a 3-0-1 record with a .911 save percentage and 2.47 goals against average. Wedgewood was holding down the fort while Blackwood was recovering from his offseason surgery. During that time, Wedgewood went 13-1-2 with a .918 save percentage and 2.09 goals against average.
San Jose Sharks lines today
Tyler Toffoli is a game-time decision. If he’s not good to go, then the Sharks will run with 11 forwards and 7 defensemen. If he’s good, then they will run with the normal 12 forward lines and 6 defensemen, according to San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng. Look for Yaroslav Askarov in the net for the Sharks.
