Officiating continues to make waves across the National Hockey League this season, and the Montreal Canadiens were once again the victims of a mistake.

On Wednesday night against the Utah Mammoth, a strange decision made by the referees could have been costly for Martin St-Louis’ squad.

As the Canadiens were trying to protect their 4-3 lead, with the Mammoth buzzing in their zone and Jakub Dobes coming up big multiple times, disaster nearly struck.

Dobes’s teammates finally managed to clear the zone, and they even almost scored a huge goal (into an empty net), as the puck hit the post. That’s when the referees made a strange decision. Icing was called on the play, against the Montreal Canadiens.

How could the referees call icing when the puck hit the post?

It was so obvious too! You can imagine the reactions online.

“How is it an icing if it hit the post?”

– Marc Dumont

It was a very bad call from the official and it was confirmed after the game. It absolutely was not icing! That’s the kind of mistake that could have hurt the Habs late in the game.

We also got a memorable moment from Jakub Dobes immediately after the win.

Let’s also remember that, according to Gary Bettman, the NHL is the best-officiated league in the world. Well then!
