There is sad news to report out of the NHL today, as the Montreal Canadiens are mourning the passing of former Montreal Forum public address announcer Marcel Bélanger.
The Canadiens released the following statement of sympathy and remembrance on X, passing along sympathies to the family he leaves behind:
The Canadiens organization is saddened to learn of the passing of former team employee Marcel Bélanger. Marcel served as the in-house announcer at the Montreal Forum and was at the heart of many memorable moments in team history, including the Good Friday Massacre and the 1993 Stanley Cup championship. The organization extends its sincere condolences to Marcel’s family and loved ones.
It’s a well deserved tribute to someone who played a critical role in the organization behind the scenes. Even though he wasn’t playing on the ice, he still held a special place in the hearts of a generation of Canadiens fans who routinely attended the former legendary home of Habs hockey.
The Canadiens Called The Montreal Forum Home For Decades
From 1926 to 1996, the Montreal Forum was home to the Canadiens and hosted multiple Stanley Cup winning teams, including the dynasties of Montreal from the 1970s.
The venue also hosted countless legendary musical acts as well as political conventions and other sporting events.
The Canadiens moved to Bell Centre, which was initially called Molson Centre, in 1996, which now seems like ages ago.
