NHL fans were quick to react after the Montreal Canadiens reclaimed forward Sammy Blais off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. Montreal was the only team to submit a claim. Because Blais began his career with the Canadiens, he was immediately loaned to the Laval Rocket.
Blais, 29, has played a depth role this season, posting three points in eight games. He averages just over eight minutes per game and brings energy and physical play. His offensive production has always been modest, recording 74 points in 265 career games. However, his style fits well on a Montreal team dealing with injuries.

Elliotte Friedman broke the news on X, writing simply,
“Montreal claims Blais.”
Many fans were stunned by how quickly the move happened. Reactions poured in across X as fans noticed the post.
“Well, that didn’t take long.” One fan wrote.
“Lmfao welcome back.” Another joked.
“I’m sure this won’t backfire on the Leafs at all,” one fan reacted.
The mix of surprise and humor reflected how unexpected the news felt for both fanbases. Blais had only been in the Maple Leafs organization for a short time before returning to Montreal.

“We did sign him, so it makes sense that we bring him back,” one fan wrote.
“Two terrible players claimed in a week. Kent Hughes is COOKING,” one fan critiqued the Habs general manager.
“If you speak French, Montreal will claim you no matter what,” one fan joked.
The Leafs, now 10-10-3, continue to struggle with defensive issues and special teams. Montreal, at 12-7-3, has been more consistent and values added depth. The move gives the Canadiens another experienced bottom-six option as they push to stay competitive in the Atlantic Division.
