Just as soon as the Seattle Kraken got to full strength with the return of a key offensive weapon, they’ve lost another due to injury.

Wednesday: Seattle Kraken activate Jared McCann from IR

The Kraken announced Friday that center Jaden Schwartz, who leads the team with 15 points, will miss approximately six weeks with a lower-body injury.

Schwartz was injured in Wednesday’s 3-2 loss at home to the Dallas Stars. That was the same game that left wing Jared McCann, who has led the Kraken in points in each of their first four NHL seasons, made his return from injured reserve after being out of action since mid-October with a lower-body injury of his own.

The 33-year-old Schwartz has been enjoying one of the best seasons of his 15-year career. In addition to his 15 points, he’s tied for first on the Kraken with eight goals, two power-play goals and a plus/minus of plus-six. Schwartz is also tied for fourth on the team with 48 shots and is third with a 16.7% shooting percentage.

If Schwartz misses six weeks, he would be on track to return around mid-January. He may get extra time to recover with a three-week break scheduled for the NHL in February due to the Winter Olympics.

Seattle can ill afford to lose any offensive firepower, as its average of 2.57 goals per game is lower than all but four other teams in the league. The Kraken have been carried by their defense and goaltending this season, ranking second in the NHL with 2.57 goals allowed per game. Having identical averages for goals scored and goals allowed can help explain why Seattle is tied for the most overtime games this season with 10.

The Kraken are 11-6-6 this season, which ties them for second place in the Pacific Division with the Vegas Golden Knights at 28 points in the standings. The Anaheim Ducks lead the division with 29 points.

Seattle returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against the Edmonton Oilers.
