RALEIGH — Brandon Bussi made the key saves when the Hurricanes needed them, and Seth Jarvis’ hat trick against his hometown team was more than enough offense to end Carolina’s two-game skid.

Jordan Martinook broke a tie with just over eight minutes left, and Jarvis tacked on two goals after that to complete his second career hat trick in the Hurricanes’ 5-1 win over the Jets on Friday at Lenovo Center.

“I’ve just been focused on shooting pucks more, putting the puck to the net,” said Jarvis, who now has 15 goals in 24 games. “And I think my confidence hasn’t really wavered, and I still believe every shot should go in. So it’s been that way all season, and hopefully it continues.”

The game could have taken a much different turn if not for Bussi.

The 27-year-old, claimed off waivers from Boston on Oct. 5, stopped Kyle Connor on a shorthanded breakaway just under six minutes into the third period to keep the game tied 1-1, extending his right pad to deny one of the NHL’s best goal scorers.

“Good move,” Bussi said of Connor’s effort. “I think I got a pretty good plant on my back leg there to kind of keep myself from shifting over. But it felt good.”

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour called it “the play of the game.”

“It could have went, and then you’re down and this might have been different,” Brind’Amour said. “But I thought that was the turning point for us. We were able to not have to change anything. We were playing fine, and then obviously the floodgates opened.”

That started with Martinook ending a 13-game goal drought to break the tie.

The Hurricanes controlled the puck behind the Winnipeg net and then cycled it around the boards to Shayne Gostisbehere. Gostisbehere then sent it back to Mark Jankowski — filling in for the sick Jordan Staal for the third straight game — behind the net, and he found Martinook in the right circle.

Martinook quickly released a shot that beat Jets goalie Thomas Milic (30 saves) — making his NHL debut — to give Carolina a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

“It’s been tough sledding,” Martinook said. “I feel like I go through highs and lows, and it’s been a little bit of a low. So I’ll take that.”

The line of Jankowski, Martinook and William Carrier didn’t allow a shot on goal when on the ice together, outshooting the Jets 8-0 on the night.

“It was just getting back to what makes us successful and getting in on the forecheck and playing hard and obviously being defensively aware most of the time,” Martinook said.

Then Jarvis, who scored in the first period, took over.

The Winnipeg native got his third of the night off a nice pass from K’Andre Miller, burying a shot from the slot just 47 seconds after Martinook’s goal to double the lead to 3-1.

He then finished off the hat trick at 18:57 with Milic on the bench for an extra attacker, settling down an Andrei Svechnikov high flip and backhanding the puck into the vacant net.

Jarvis was quick to credit his teammates’ passes for getting him his first hat trick since Feb. 16, 2023, against Montreal.

“(Gostisbehere’s) pass was elite,” Jarvis said of the first goal. “Key’s pass was great. Even Svechie’s flip was perfect. I mean, I was really getting set up tonight.”

That started in the first period when Carolina was rewarded with a 1-0 lead after dominating the opening 20 minutes.

Sebastian Aho collected the puck at the left boards and dropped it back to Gostisbehere. Milic sealed the post, taking away the shot, so Gostisbehere rotated and passed the puck right onto Jarvis’ stick. He snapped the puck in at 16:06 of the first for a 1-0 lead.

“When he has the puck, all I’m trying to do is get open — I know he’ll find me,” Jarvis said of Gostisbehere, who had two assists and now has 18 points in 15 games this season.

A turnover allowed the Jets to tie the game just past the midway point of regulation.

Svechnikov telegraphed a pass in the offensive zone that helped send Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele on a breakaway, and the forward beat Bussi (12 saves) to tie the game at 10:41 of the second period.

Bussi was up to the task on every other opportunity — as he has been in his seven starts.

“He played great all game,” Jarvis said of Bussi. “I think he didn’t get tested a whole lot, but when he did, he was making big saves. And yeah, that one was massive for our confidence and to keep us in the game.”

Jarvis added that if Bussi had been an unknown less than two months ago, “I think they know who he is now. He’s been electric. He’s the best guy, so there’s no one I’m happier for.”

The win improved Bussi to 6-1-0 to start his NHL career.

“Six and one is more of a reflection on the team than one individual. But overall, pretty pumped,” Bussi said.
