It was reported today that the Detroit Red Wings forward Austin Watson has been suspended for one game after today’s cross-checking incident.

Ann Arbor, Michigan-born forward Austin Watson has been a part of the Detroit Red Wings organization since 2024.

He turned a professional tryout into a legitimate contract and has seen himself utilized as a call-up in the NHL.

He’s spent the majority of his career with the Red Wings, playing for the AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Today, Watson did something completely reckless in the AHL against the Iowa Wild.

“The American Hockey League’s Player Safety Committee today announced that Grand Rapids Griffins forward Austin Watson has been suspended for one (1) game as a consequence of a cross-checking incident at the conclusion of a game vs. Iowa on Nov. 28.”

As a result of his lack of discipline, Watson will be suspended for one game on Sunday, November 30th, against the Iowa Wild.

The Detroit Red Wings’ own Austin Watson has been suspended for one game

This is a black mark on Watson’s career this season. Last year, playing in the AHL, he joined goaltender Sebastian Cossa on a trip to the AHL All-Star Game when he scored 42 points (19-23) in 60 games with the Griffins.

His current contract pays him $775K AAV (average annual value) and expires at the end of this season.

Watson has played 528 games in the NHL and scored 121 points (63-58) and was a 1st-round draft pick of the Nashville Predators, selected 18th overall in 2010.
