Oilers 4, Kraken 0
The Seattle Kraken’s perceived weaknesses came to the forefront during the first twenty minutes. First of all, Edmonton has the more high-end talent and it showed, at least at even strength, as the Oilers were first-on-pucks on a consistent basis and showing more adeptness offensively.
Secondly, the Seattle power play had three full opportunities in the first period, including an extensive 5-on-3. They failed to click. Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner was up to the task, handling whatever the Kraken could throw at him. The man advantage has been an area of inconsistency for Seattle, and it’s taken a bit of nosedive lately.
Meanwhile Edmonton went 1-for-1, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scoring at 11:29 of the first.
Seattle’s fourth power play of the game actually carried over into the second period for almost a full two minutes and the PP units failed to record a shot.
Nearing the midway point of the game, Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl went off for elbowing Seattle’s Mason Marchment, who earlier became public enemy number-one of the Oilers for his feisty play and a big hit on D-man Darnell Nurse.
The fifth Kraken power play? More of the same, with the best scoring chance coming on a solo rush by rookie Berkly Catton.
By the way, the 19-year-old had his best game of the season, topping a very solid performance he had three nights earlier against the Dallas Stars.
The superior talent factor leapt forward again at the 12:30 mark of the second period when Draisaitl ripped a wrist shot over the blocker of Joey Daccord for a 2-0 Oilers lead.
The goal seemed to take the wind out of the Kraken’s sails for the remainder of the period.
When the Oilers earned another power play late in the second, it came as no surprise when they tallied. Zach Hyman deflected a puck home for 3-0 lead. Edmonton was 2-for-2 on the PP.
The Kraken came out with good energy and appeared up for a fight in the third period, but the game was over when Connor McDavid scored his 11th goal of the season at 6:25 for a 4-0 lead.
Edmonton is 13-and-4 against Seattle.
