The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to struggle this season. They hold an 11-11-3 record and sit near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, with only Buffalo below them. This contrasts with the team’s expectations when they entered this season after a round two loss in the 2025 playoffs.

This season, their offense is strong, which keeps them close in most games. However, their defense allows 3.56 goals per game, which is a major problem. Special teams have also been inconsistent, and this is not a good sign for their playoff hopes. And this likely puts pressure on the management to make changes.

These issues have led to new rumors about the coaching staff. On Saturday, NHL insider Howard Berger posted that a Leafs representative may have checked in with Pete DeBoer. DeBoer coached the Dallas Stars until he was fired in June 2025. Berger suggested the Leafs may want to know if DeBoer can help a team that looks unmotivated.

“It wouldn’t be particularly fair to Craig Berube, but a little birdie tells me a #Leafs emissary has checked in with Pete DeBoer, fired last year by #Dallas. Could he get more out of this unmotivated group? #LeafsForever #Stars #NHL” Berger wrote.

Craig Berube took over the Maple Leafs in May 2024, and he was hired for his strong defensive system and leadership style. Berube helped the St. Louis Blues win the Stanley Cup in 2019, which raised hopes in Toronto. His team has shown more grit at times, but they are still often outplayed. Their current record shows the roster has not yet matched the structure Berube wants.

Coach Peter DeBoer’s link to the Toronto Maple Leafs

Peter DeBoer remains an experienced coach who is available today. He has no history behind the Leafs bench, but he was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1988. He led the Stars to three straight Western Conference Finals before his firing. Still, he has a reputation for helping teams settle quickly and perform well in big games.

The Leafs have not confirmed any contact with DeBoer, and this report is limited to Berger’s claims. However, Toronto needs better results to avoid major decisions like this.

They have lost eight out of their last 11 games, and if the poor play continues, the front office may explore more coaching options under pressure. The situation will remain worth watching as the season moves forward.
