Connor Bedard’s 4 points lifted the Chicago Blackhawks out of a 5 game skid. Chicago went down 3-0 10 minutes into game

First Period:

The game started out with a bang for the Anaheim Ducks. Just 15 seconds into the game, Troy Terry broke free on a 2-on-1 with Cutter Gauthier. Gauthier caught the Chicago Blackhawks flat-footed and put one past Spencer Knight to take the early advantage. Just 30 seconds later, Owen Zellweger would put home a rebound off the face-off shot to quickly double the lead for the Ducks, leaving the home crowd, most of whom were yet to take their seats, stunned.

As the old saying goes, “When it rains, it pours”. Halfway through the period, Beckett Sennecke found Chris Kreider for the backdoor tap-in to give Anaheim a 3-0 advantage. The Chicago Blackhawks’ bench was left scrambling after Teuvo Teravainen took a penalty.

Things couldn’t get much lower for the ‘Hawks as boos cascaded down from the stands. A glimmer of hope shone at the end of the period as Chicago, on the power play, found themselves looking to Tyler Bertuzzi, who redirected Frank Nazar’s shot past former Chicago Blackhawk Peter Mrazek. The ‘Hawks drew another penalty heading into the second frame of play, down 3-1.

The Chicago Blackhawks came into the second period with a new fire lit under them. Most likely due to Jeff Blashill’s rage in the first intermission. Teuvo Teravainen had a great chance, but played hot potato with his linemates, passing on multiple shots. Alex Vlasic was called for a penalty, nearly halting the Blackhawks’ momentum, but the call was overturned by the officiating crew. When the city needed him most, Connor Bedard delivered. Using his newfound speed and a box out by Alex Vlasic Bedard faked out Owen Zelleweger and threw a pass to Ryan Greene, who put home the one timer to cut the deficit.

It was all Chicago, all period, after Beckett Sennecke spent time in the sin bin. Anaheim’s penalty kill almost scored, but Spencer Knight showed the pad. The big stop led to Colton Dach beating his former teammate, Peter Mrazek, over the shoulder. It was a new game heading to the final period of play.

Third Period:

Chicago had all the momentum heading into the final frame, but Anaheim battled back. Bedard set up Greene for a chance, but the momentum fizzled quickly. On the penalty kill, poor puck management in the defensive zone led to Alex Killorn scoring. Luckily for the Blackhawks, the play was called offside, which reignited the spark in the United Center. The two teams played a tight, conservative game, but the ice would open back up after a crushing play for the Anaheim Ducks.  Already down starter Lukas Dostal, Peter Mrazek would pull his groin on an awkward redirection and wraparound by Ilya Mikheyev. This led coach Joel Quenneville to turn to Ville Husso for the rest of the game. An advantage the Chicago Blackhawks looked to take.

Connor Bedard would be the one to take it. In front of the net, the puck went to Bedard after an errant pass from Alex Killorn. Bedsy deked out Husso to give Chicago its first lead of the game. Anaheim bounced back and pushed. However, Spencer Knight continued to hold back rush after rush, shot after shot, including a stick save on Sennecke right on the doorstep. Connor Bedard recorded his 4th point of the night to send the Chicago

The Cowboy Round-Up and What’s On Tap:

Well, that is one way to close out the weekend. In their last game, the Chicago Blackhawks looked flat, and the first period of this game was no different. Coming off five straight losses, one would think this team would roll over. Maybe in the past, they would have. However, great teams are defined by their response to adversity, and this team showed who they were this afternoon. Unlike early this season in Buffalo, Chicago fought back.

As Jeff Blashill said, “What I like is that we didn’t try to get it back in one shift, we kept fighting…” Connor Bedard once again staked his claim as a part-owner of the Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club. Bedard now has 16 points (3G, 12A) in just eight games against the Ducks. The two teams face off next week, and after a chippy affair today, circle that game on your calendar.
