Are the Flyers pursuing Quinn Hughes? Frank Seravalli says Philly is interested, but the Canucks may demand Matvei Michkov in a blockbuster trade deal.
The noise out of Vancouver is getting deafening, and if you’re a Philadelphia Flyers fan, you should be paying very close attention. The Canucks have officially entered “sell mode,” waving the white flag on their current core. While the organization publicly maintains that captain Quinn Hughes is untouchable, where there’s smoke, there is usually a roaring fire.
Let’s be real: if Hughes declines a contract extension next summer, Vancouver has to move him. They cannot risk walking a Norris Trophy winner to free agency for nothing.
The High Price of Acquiring a Norris Trophy Winner
While everyone and their dog expects the New Jersey Devils to be the front-runners—reuniting Quinn with brothers Jack and Luke is the NHL’s worst-kept secret—don’t sleep on Philadelphia. NHL insider Frank Seravalli recently dropped a bombshell, suggesting the Flyers would be “salivating” to get involved if Hughes hits the market.
Why Philly? It makes too much sense. The Flyers are exiting their rebuild phase and are hungry for a legitimate superstar on the backend. But here is where the rubber meets the road: the cost.
It is speculated that a Hughes package requires a first-round draft pick, a high-end prospect, and an elite young player. The Flyers have the cupboard to make this happen, but it leads to the ultimate question: would they part with Matvei Michkov or 2025 phenom Porter Martone?
In my opinion, Michkov and Martone should be absolute non-starters. You don’t trade generational offensive talent to fix your blue line; you build around them. However, if Vancouver’s GM Patrik Allvin is smart, he starts the negotiation by asking for one of them. If the Flyers hold firm on keeping their young jewels, their odds of landing Hughes drop significantly compared to a Devils team that can offer a king’s ransom of defensive prospects.
It’s going to be a fascinating summer. If Hughes signals he wants out, the bidding war will be historic. The Flyers are definitely in the mix, but unless they get creative, the allure of the “Hughes Brothers Reunion” in Jersey might be too strong to overcome.
