Some Detroit Red Wings prospects are greatly benefiting from their time with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL on their journey toward the NHL.
What’s encouraging to see is that many players are playing above expectations in Grand Rapids. Let’s break down what a few of them have accomplished so far this season.
Four Red Wings Prospects Currently Shining In Grand Rapids
Right off the bat, Sebastian Cossa’s start to the season must not be overlooked. The goalie has a 7-1-0 record with a 1.76 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage.
The Wings’ 15th overall pick in 2021 became the eighth goalie in Griffins history to reach the 50-win mark last week.
He had to miss some time due to an injury, but Cossa definitely shows that he has reached another level of his game.
After he was sent down to the AHL following nine games in the NHL, the 2024 15th overall pick found his rhythm with the Griffins, scoring nine points in his last seven games.
In 12 total games with Grand Rapids this season, he has four goals and seven assists.
Even if he struggled early in the season in the NHL, he is poised to develop into a great power forward in the coming years.
The Latvian forward scored his first hat trick in the AHL last week and now has eight points, including six goals, in his last seven games, tying him for second rank on the team for goals, with 10 in total.
The undrafted 28-year-old winger has taken a lot of people by surprise this season and is definitely showing a lot of promise.
The 27-year-old forward is standing out as the Griffins’ top scorer, with 14 goals in as many games.
Not only that, but he’s also first in the AHL for goals and second in points. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets an opportunity to play with the Red Wings this season.
