Devin Cooley is making the most of his first extended stint in the NHL with the Calgary Flames.
The 28-year-old had a shutout regulation time and turned aside 16 of the 17 shots he faced in a 1-0 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, ending his three-game winning streak. Cooley’s record for the season stands at 3-2-2 with an impressive .930 save percentage and a 1.88 goals-against average.
“I’m just having a lot of fun, I think that’s what it is,” Cooley said after Sunday’s loss. ”I’m trying not to think too much about myself at all. In previous years and even in preseason, I was just so focused internally and stressed out and second-guessing myself. And now I’m only focused on what the other team is doing and trying to have a lot of fun while I play. It makes things so much easier.”
Undrafted to begin his professional career, Cooley made his NHL debut with the San Jose Sharks in 2023-24, going 2-3-1 with a .870 save percentage and a 4.98 goals-against average in six games.
He joined the Flames organization in 2024 on a two-year, $1.55 million contract and spent all of last season with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, posting a 21-17-5 record with a .905 save percentage and a 2.94 GAA. His showing with the Wranglers was enough to convince general manager Craig Conroy to entrust him with the backup role behind Dustin Wolf this season.
Wolf has taken a step back over the first two months of this season from his wildly impressive rookie campaign a year ago. The 24-year-old netminder has a 6-12-2 record with an .890 save percentage and a 3.17 GAA.
The Flames remain at the bottom of the Pacific Division with 22 points through 27 games, but are 4-1-1 in their past six after a dismal start to the campaign. The team is five points back of the final playoff wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Flames head coach Ryan Huska believes his team may have left an additional point on the table Sunday.
“There wasn’t a lot of room either way tonight,” Huska said. “I think for our team we didn’t get the result we wanted, but I did like a lot of the way we played. We had some really good opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize on them.”
Calgary will open their December schedule against the last-place Nashville Predators on Tuesday.
