Despite the Calgary Flames’ winning four of their last five games, their offence remains the worst in the NHL. Through 26 games, the team is averaging just 2.33 goals per game, the lowest rate in the NHL. Their goal production is currently tracking as the second-worst in franchise history, signalling a truly horrific offence.
As such, it isn’t surprising that the team’s roster is currently on pace for some unattractive 82-game point totals. If their current production holds for the rest of the season, we could see some all-time terrible output across the board. This has been a truly terrible season for the Flames offence. Let’s break it down.
The forwards
First off, the forwards. If a team is averaging just 2.33 goals per game, it means the Flames’ offence and particularly their forwards aren’t doing their job. A reminder that the Flames possess one of the highest-paid forward groups in the entire NHL. Here’s how each forwards 82-game pace looks right now. The good
Nazem Kadri continues to show his immense trade value
No matter how bad the Calgary Flames are, no matter how little offence they generate, Nazem Kadri always shows up. Whether you believe the veteran should be traded or not, you can’t deny his ability to perform when the rest of the team doesn’t, which is great news for his trade value. Despite being 35 years old, Kadri is well on his way to leading the team in scoring for the third straight season. Not just that, he’s the only forward on pace for over 45 points right now. On the worst offence in the NHL, 64 points is tremendous production from a 35-year-old.
Matt Coronato has shaken off a bad start
Despite a truly horrific start to the year that saw him sitting in the press-box at one point, Coronato has turned things around and is currently on pace to lead the Flames in goals with a career high 25 tucks. Even his point totals have rebounded a bit, now sitting on pace for around three fewer than last year. Obviously, you’d like Coronato to take a step forward given his new contract, but given he plays on the worst offence in hockey and under a coach whose system is a black hole for creativity, setting a career high in goals would be a win.
Frostbee bouncebacks
Following the trade that brought them to Calgary, both Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee were dreadful last year. The duo combined for just 18 points in the final 32 games of the season. The good news is that both have been better offensively this year. Frost is currently on pace for 43 points, which would be the second-best total of his career. Farabee meanwhile is on pace for 21 goals and 39 points, both of which would be the second-best totals of his career. Given that they should be complementary players on any competent roster, their production is a win for the Flames.
Blake Coleman continues to show his value
Much like Kadri, Blake Coleman is also having a strong 2025-26 season as he sits in the centre of trade rumours. The two-time champ is currently on pace for the second-best goal total of his career with 24 goals. Currently on pace to finish second on the entire Flames roster in goals behind only Coronato, Coleman continues to show just how valuable he is, even at 34 years of age.
Mikael Backlund is inevitable
Mikael Backlund has continued to defy Father Time and has quietly been really solid for the Flames once again. Apart from posting some strong underlying numbers as the Flames’ shutdown centre, Backlund is also on pace for 43 points, which would be his highest total since the 2022-23 season. His current pace of 31 assists would also be tied for the second-best total of his career. At 36 years old, Backlund continues to be one of the Flames’ top forwards.
The bad
Adam Klapka may not be an NHL player
After starting the season on the Flames’ first line, Adam Klapka has slowly drifted into obscurity this season. The big winger is currently on pace for around just six goals and 16 points on the year. Given he was on pace for 26 points last year and he’s been given even more opportunity this season, seeing his point pace drop by 10 points is a pretty big red flag. Now 25 years old, it may be time to end the Klapka experiment and admit he’s nothing more than a fringe fourth liner.
What does Ryan Lomberg do?
I know our expectations for Ryan Lomberg are low, but somehow he’s currently still coming in under expectation. The veteran forward is on pace for a shocking three points and zero goals this season. There are currently 17 goalies in the NHL who have as many points as Lomberg does this season, and he’s played 24 games.
The ugly
Connor Zary is a shell of his former self
After a long contract holdout in the off-season, Connor Zary’s 2025-26 campaign could not have gotten off to a worse start. After signing a prove-it type contract, Zary’s offence has completely disappeared this season. The 24-year-old is currently on pace for a measly 13 points. Even in an injury-shortened season last year, he still managed over double his current pace in 2025-26. Zary has been dreadful this season, and the Flames desperately need a lot more from him.
Yegor Sharangovich is somehow getting even worse
After a tough 2024-25 season, Yegor Sharangovich has somehow been even worse in 2025-26, just in time for his five-year extension to kick off. The 27-year-old is currently sitting on an 11-goal, 25-point pace. Decent enough numbers for a bottom-six forward, not someone being paid nearly six million dollars a year to produce offence. With zero signs of improvement so far, Sharangovich is on a fast track to being remembered as one of the worst contracts in Flames history.
