An NHL insider has shared some new information on whether or not Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood will sign a contract extension as part of any trade.
The Columbus, Ohio native is among several players on the Vancouver Canucks that have been made available on the trade market amid the team’s poor start to the 2025-26 season and without a doubt, Sherwood will net Patrik Allvin the biggest return of any pending UFA on their roster.
Sherwood’s contract situation is pretty simple to understand right now as the Vancouver Canucks and his camp held preliminary discussions early on in the summer but nothing came of it and after the pending UFA changed his representation, talks about a new deal went silent.
As Sherwood looks to continue to raise the value of his next contract, it doesn’t appear that an extension will be part of any trade the Vancouver Canucks make between now and March 6th involving the 30-year-old winger.
NHL insider shares new information about whether Kiefer Sherwood will sign extension before being traded
During an appearance on Sekeres and Price last week, NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed that it doesn’t sound like the Vancouver Canucks will allow teams to talk about a contract with Kiefer Sherwood before he’s traded.
“I haven’t gotten any indication that Vancouver’s gonna allow other teams to talk to his agent; obviously…sign an extension you can maximize your return; this might be a straight rental situation.” Pagnotta said.
“I am hearing it’s a first round pick plus for Kiefer Sherwood.” Pagnotta said last week.
As many as ten teams have been linked to Kiefer Sherwood over the last week, so it’s going to be very interesting to see where he ends up and what the return will actually be, which will depend on his play over the next three months, if Patrik Allvin decides to wait until deadline day to complete a trade.
