The turning point of Monday’s game was easy to see. The Flyers tied the game early in the second on a 5-on-3, and with a delayed penalty call on the goal, were about to get more time at 5-on-3 with a chance at the lead.

Tyson Foerster, who had scored the tying goal, attempted another shot during the extended two-man advantage. He crumbled to the ice in pain, leaving with his arm dangling at his side and rushing up the tunnel, throwing his gloves in the process.

The injury to Foerster, which ended his night, effectively ended the Flyers’ night too. The team looked lifeless from there, as the Penguins’ power play did damage with three tallies in a 5-1 loss at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

The Penguins got on the board first at 9:18 of the first period. Sidney Crosby scored on a rebound for his 17th goal of the season to make it 1-0.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 8-7 Flyers.

Foerster scored at 5:36 of the first period on a shot toward the side of the net. It may have been intended for a deflection, but instead beat Tristan Jarry. It was Foerster’s 10th of the season.

Following Foerster’s departure, the Flyers did not score on the remaining 5-on-3 time, then took a penalty to put the Penguins on the power play. They made quick work of it with Crosby scoring his second of the game at 8:08.

With 4:08 remaining in the period, the Pittsburgh power play was at it again as Bryan Rust rifled a shot past Dan Vladar to make it 3-1.

Through two periods, shots were 16-14 Pittsburgh.

In the third, the Penguins put the game away. Despite having another power-play goal erased on a successful goalie interference challenge, Tommy Novak scored Pittsburgh’s third power-play goal of the game at 13:52. Kevin Hayes capped the scoring with a breakaway goal at 15:33.

Vladar made 22 saves on 27 shots in the loss. Jarry made 28 saves on 29 shots in the win.

Rust had a goal and two assists. Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Erik Karlsson each had two points.

The Flyers continue the homestand on Wednesday night against the Buffalo Sabres at 7:30 p.m.
