“If you’re Yzerman, do you not take a real swing at this, if/when he [Hughes] becomes available. Family lives there. Ties to the state obviously. Ties to the University of Michigan. Do you not take a real swing at Quinn Hughes?” Marek said.
McGuire responded by saying, “Yeah, like Dylan Larkin’s there too. You know, there’s a lot going on there. So the answer is yes. J.T Compher’s another one that’s there. So the answer is yeah, you do. I still think New Jersey’s probably leading the pack. I would say Detroit’s got to be in the mix, if that’s what Steve wants to do. Steve did an amazing job there and I think he’s trying to put his footprint on the Detroit Red Wings, but I think he also realizes they’ve developed the green banana business, they’ve done a really good job at getting prospects, but some of those guys have been able to take the next step and some of them haven’t and I think they probably need some help right now.
What would that do to that marketplace? It hasn’t played a meaningful game since 2014, 2015 really. So almost a decade. You bring in Quinn Hughes, you ignite that marketplace and I think the Ilitch’s have been amazing stewards of the franchise there. This would cement whatever you want to say. That would be a huge addition for Detroit.”
