ROCHESTER — The Century/John Marshall girls hockey team broke open a tie with three third-period goals in a 5-3 Big Nine Conference victory against Mankato West at the Rochester Recreation Center on Tuesday.

The score was tied 1-1 after one period and 2-2 after two.

Tegan Carroll scored 1:50 into the third period to give Century/JM the lead for good. Katie Nelson scored a power-play goal — her second of the game — with 3:55 to go, for some breathing room. Carroll then scored her second of the game on the ensuing shift, just 32 seconds later, to make it a 5-2 game.

West’s Maree Zimmerman scored with 1:14 remaining to pull the Scarlets within two, but that was it for West’s offense.

Kennedy Stewart scored in the first period and Nelson scored in the second to keep the Panthers and Scarlets deadlocked after two.

Isabella Scranton made 22 saves for Century/JM in the win.

The Panthers improve to 6-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the Big Nine. They host St. Paul/Two Rivers at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Rec Center.
