The Washington Capitals are hot as a pistol, now riding a five-game winning streak after downing the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. The Caps secured a 3-1 victory over the Kings in a tightly checked battle way after all of our bedtimes.
Let’s hope for two more wins out west. That would be sweet.
I think both teams controlled the flow of the game for long stretches, trading wins in the first and second periods. However, the Capitals really took hold of the game in the third period after Anthony Beauvillier put them in front, and they squeezed the life out of the Kings. In a very tough environment on the road, the Caps were up 5-2 in five-on-five high-danger chances in the final frame, securing a big two points against a good team.
Tom Wilson got on the board yet again, scoring his 16th goal in his 27th game this season. Wilson is now on pace to score 49 goals this year, and if he did that, we would be able to make fun of so many people who hate him. So, Tom, please do that. He’s on a six-game point streak and has 10 points (5g, 5a) in those games.
Alex Ovechkin played provider on the team’s two goals on an actual goaltender. The two assists bring Ovi to 27 points (12g, 15a) in 27 games this season. Just a casual point-per-game pace for a 40-year-old in the NHL. I’m starting to see him really moving his feet better, too. I think that injury in training camp really slowed him down out of the gate this year. Spencer Carbery is deploying him perfectly, and the points have started pouring in. The captain is on a five-game point streak and has recorded 19 points (10g, 9a) in his last 15 games.
The Capitals have won five straight and are 8-1-0 in their last nine games.

Logan Thompson was phenomenal again, in another showcase against potential Team Canada competition. He made 24 stops on 25 shots and, per MoneyPuck, saved 1.77 more goals than expected. Darcy Kuemper was also good for the Kings, saving 0.48 more goals than expected.
The power play looked…fantastic. What a weird sentence for me to type. They only got two attempts, but the first one was easily the best they have looked up a man all season. Ryan Leonard brings a real special sort of controlled chaos to the unit, and Jakob Chychrun has been incredibly sure-handed at the point. I do wish we were seeing more playmaking from Dylan Strome recently, though.
I think the Capitals need to try something else with their fourth line if Nic Dowd is going to be out for a few more games. Hendrix Lapierre is just not doing much for me, and this is probably his last chance. Sonny Milano played just 5:52 in the win. Ethen Frank is the only guy I would definitely keep out there. If I had it my way, I’d swap Lapierre out for Hershey’s Henrik Rybinski and run Trineyev-Rybinski-Frank right now. But, alas, this is the real world, and the Capitals are in California right now, which is, last time I checked, very far away from Pennsylvania.
