NEW YORK — A big win for the New York Rangers?
At home?
In this economy?
In all seriousness, the Blueshirts delivered an eye-opening performance on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, showing what they’re capable of against one of the top-tier teams in the league with a 3-2 overtime win over the Dallas Stars.
Will Cuylle’s goal with Igor Shesterkin pulled for the extra attacker tied the game with 2:13 left in regulation, and Vladislav Gavrikov won it just 69 seconds into overtime to deliver what would have to qualify as a stunning win against the NHL’s second-highest team in the league standings.
Just three days removed from a dud of a loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in which they mustered just 13 shots on goal, the Rangers put 41 pucks on net against Stars backup goaltender Casey DeSmith, including 21 in the third period alone.
“It certainly reinforces the game we’re trying to play when you have success,” said Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan of getting a positive result.
“I thought the guys played hard all night. I thought we competed hard against a really good team. Given the way the third period went, I felt like we were controlling play there pretty well, and we had a couple really good looks. We hit the post, and right before, they come down and score…it’s been a bit of a struggle to find wins here in this building, that could have affected the group in a negative way, but I give the players a lot of credit because I think there was a certain determination in their mindset that that wasn’t going to beat us.”
To be clear, the Blueshirts deserved to win the game. This was no fluke win, not at home and not against a quality opponent. They looked the part and played like they belonged.
They now sit a point off the last wild card spot in the Eastern Conference and while perhaps aren’t as loaded up as they were in their three-year run of two trips to the Conference Final between 2022-24 before last season’s collapse, they still have the look of a team that could do some damage in the postseason were they to get there.
It is, of course, only the first week of December. But the Rangers do, of course, have Shesterkin, who was good when he needed to be on Tuesday night, including a point blank save on Roope Hintz with 4:05 left in regulation with his team still down a goal that kept them in it.
“That was big,” Cuylle said. “Obviousl,y he made a lot of big saves throughout the whole game. He’s been great for us lately, and he kept us in it tonight for sure.”
