The Detroit Red Wings completed a surprising move in goals as they look to break their losing streak Tuesday night against the Boston Bruins.
As we reported earlier today, Mason Appleton won’t take part in the game as he deals with an injury, while the Bruins will be without both David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy, their two best players.
In addition, the Wings confirmed surprising news before the game.
Wings Announce Surprising Starting Goalie For Tonight’s Game
Indeed, McLellan confirmed in a press conference that John Gibson would get the start for tonight’s game.
Gibson, 32, has been struggling since joining the Red Wings, with only four wins in 13 starts, with a 3.59 goals-against average and a .865 save percentage.
His last win was on October 28th against the St. Louis Blues, but he had the best performance of his season in a 1-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, when he made 33 saves, good for a .971 SV%.
If Gibson doesn’t do the job, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Yzerman make a decision involving his goaltender unit.
