The NHL’s trade market is heating up in a big way, and look out for the Montreal Canadiens to make a splash. Reportedly, they’ve been in trade talks with the St. Louis Blues.
Darren Dreger: I keep looking at Montreal…one of those teams that most definitely is continually kicking tires on the potential of a fit with [the Blues] and some of the assets that they have up front – Sekeres & Price (12/1)
The Canadiens have one of the deepest prospect pools in the NHL, and have plenty of trade capital to work with. GM Kent Hughes has $3.7 million in cap space to work with, and they’ve been rumored to have inquired about Blues’ forward Jordan Kyrou.
There’s also Montreal’s recent goaltending concerns that have crept in, and there’s been rumors that they’d be open to both Kyrou and Jordan Binnington. Both players have trade protection, but could see Montreal as a great place for a change of scenery, as the Habs are on the rise, and look like a building contender.
As far as Canadiens trade assets go, goaltending prospect Jacob Fowler would be priority for the Blues, and they could look at Jakub Dobes, and defenseman David Reinbacher. As far as a player who would need to be included to balance out the finances, injured forwards Kirby Dach or Alex Newhook could be included, or even Sam Montembeault instead of Dobes. There’s plenty of options to work out a deal, as the Canadiens have plenty of assets to dangle,
Keep an eye on the Blues and Canadiens, they could be up to something before the holiday roster freeze.
