Dmitry Orlov hasn’t played for the Washington Capitals since 2023, but the San Jose Sharks d-man always cherishes the matchup against his former team.

The Sharks defenseman spent more than 10 seasons with the Capitals. He was traded to the Boston Bruins in 2023 and then played for the Carolina Hurricanes for the past two seasons.

Orlov has found form in recent weeks for the San Jose Sharks. He’s been productive offensively despite not scoring a goal yet this season, with 15 assists in 27 games.

“It’s always not easy against them. But it is what it is. It’s part of our lives,” Orlov told SHD exclusively. “Just try to be focused. [You are] extra motivated, probably a little bit. You want to win and make sure you have a good game.”

Many players who were with the Capitals during Orlov’s time remain on the team today. Alex Ovechkin, John Carlson, and Tom Wilson all remain top talents for the Caps.

The Sharks defenseman says sometimes going against players like that can be the hardest because he’s spent so much time skating with them in practices and non-game situations.

“It’s fun, [but] at the same time, it’s not easy. You played for this organization; you played with so many guys there. As a teammate, you like them, and it’s not easy, especially [the] first game [against] them,” Orlov said.

“Those games, [sometimes they feel like] it’s a practice—just kind of like camp time. But in the same way, you have to play hard for your new teammates, and respect the game too.”

Orlov has taken a leadership role with many of the San Jose Sharks’ young defensemen. Shakir Mukhamadullin is placed directly next to the veteran in the Sharks’ locker room. Sam Dickinson only has Vincent Desharnais, another veteran, between him and Orlov.

Orlov says the Capitals still chirp him when he’s on the ice against them. He said he’s also not afraid to be the one to start the chirps, either.

“It’s still gonna be a fun time. They always give me sh*t when I’m on the ice screaming something. Especially Alex [Ovechkin],” Orlov said. “A lot of great years, a lot of good memories in my time there. I respect this organization, and it will always stay in my heart.”

Orlov will be on the San Jose Sharks’ top pair and likely will match up against either Wilson or Ovechkin. Wilson is on a five-game points streak, and the Capitals have won five straight and eight of the past nine.
