The Toronto Maple Leafs continue searching for solutions to their defensive crisis. The franchise sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, with the blue line representing one of their most glaring weaknesses.

Management has been exploring the trade market for upgrades. One Calgary Flames defenseman has been frequently linked to the Maple Leafs. The veteran blueliner brings exactly the type of two-way ability Toronto desperately needs. However, a former NHL player recently proposed a trade package that immediately sparked debate among fans about whether the price is too steep.

Former NHL D-Man Proposes Easton Cowan-For-Rasmus Andersson Trade Scenario

Former NHL defenseman Jason Demers floated a blockbuster trade proposal involving Toronto and Calgary. The ex-player posed a direct question to fans about whether they’d make the deal. “Easton Cowan for Rasmus Andersson… Do you pull the trigger on that trade?” Demers tweeted.

The proposed swap would send Toronto’s top prospect to Calgary in exchange for the veteran defenseman. Cowan represents the Maple Leafs’ best young forward prospect and was selected 28th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The 19-year-old has dominated junior hockey while also impressing during his brief NHL stint. Andersson brings legitimate top-pairing ability and won the Flames’ team MVP award last season. The 29-year-old Swedish defenseman carries a $4.55 million cap hit through 2025-26 before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

His two-way game and offensive ability from the blue line would address multiple Toronto needs. However, the proposal immediately sparked debate about whether Toronto should sacrifice its top prospect for a rental defenseman.

Cowan represents potential franchise forward upside. Andersson provides immediate help but comes without contract certainty beyond this season. The Athletic’s James Mirtle recently reported the Maple Leafs have been interested in acquiring Andersson dating back to last year’s trade deadline.

Calgary wanted premium assets in return, making a deal difficult to complete. The ownership also reportedly has been reluctant to trade with former GM Brad Treliving, who now leads Toronto. But Cowan has been outstanding for the London Knights this season.

The forward possesses elite hockey IQ, two-way ability, and scoring touch. He projects as a legitimate top-six NHL forward with the potential to become a first-line player. Toronto views him as a cornerstone piece for their future.

Andersson would provide the defensive upgrade Toronto needs immediately. However, giving up Cowan for a rental seems shortsighted unless the Maple Leafs believe they can contend for a Stanley Cup this season. Their current position in the standings makes that seem unlikely.

Whether Demers’ proposal represents realistic trade value or is simply a matter of social media speculation remains unclear. For now, the debate continues about what Toronto should sacrifice to address its defensive problems.
