For the second time in less than three weeks, the Flyers struck for three goals in short order. Very short order.
After giving up the first goal, three goals separated by 59 seconds put the Flyers in front for good on Wednesday night. The Flyers bounced back from Monday’s loss with a 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
The Sabres got an early power play and opened the scoring at 4:08. Jason Zucker was left alone in the slot and finished off a nice passing play for his eighth goal of the season to make it 1-0.
The Flyers were on the power play just over four minutes later and tied things up. Travis Konecny fired a shot through a screen for his sixth goal of the season to make it 1-1.
After an unsuccessful challenge by the Sabres, the Flyers were back on the power play and took the lead just 38 seconds later. Trevor Zegras’ cross-ice pass deflected off the skate of Ryan McLeod and went in for his 10th goal of the season to make it 2-1 at 9:04.
Just 21 seconds later, the Flyers added to the lead, taking advantage of a turnover. Bobby Brink put home a rebound for his seventh goal of the season to make it 3-1.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 11-4 Flyers.
Just seconds after a power play expired, the Flyers added to the lead at 1:45 of the second. Noah Cates was in front of the net to tip in a feed from Brink to make it 4-1 with his sixth goal of the season.
The Sabres pushed back from there, taking 14 of the next 15 shots on goal. Bowen Byran scored his sixth goal of the season at 11:48 to cut the Flyers lead to two.
Less than a minute later at 12:43, the Flyers restored the three-goal lead, as Owen Tippett stayed with a rebound and scored his ninth goal of the season.
With 3:10 remaining in the second, Rasmus Dahlin drove Zegras into the boards for a major penalty and game misconduct.
Through two periods, shots were 23-18 Flyers.
The Sabres had a goal called back on a successful offside challenge in the third.
Sam Ersson made 27 saves on 29 shots in the win. Colten Ellis made 30 saves on 35 shots in the loss.
Five Flyers finished with multi-point games: Brink, Konecny, Cates, Matvei Michkov, and Travis Sanheim.
Cam York left the game after the second period and did not return.
The Flyers are back on the ice on Sunday afternoon, facing the Colorado Avalanche at 1 p.m.
