This game had “scheduled loss” for the Washington Capitals written all over it: second half of a back-to-back with travel, on the California road trip, and in a building where they don’t always play well. They were also down Justin Sourdif (injury) up front coming into the game, and then the team announced that John Carlson would also be out with injury after Fortunately for them, and unfortunately for the San Jose Sharks, it was anything but. The Capitals exploded for four goals in the first period, and they never looked back: they tacked on two more in the middle frame and then one more just for good measure in the third.
Plus: There are plenty of good things to write about from tonight’s game, but the quick start from Washington was the biggest piece of the puzzle for sure. Their four-goal first period would have been a stellar way to start any game, but it was extra important on the second half of a back-to-back. The offensive production didn’t stop after the first period either, and a total of 10 skaters plus Charlie Lindgren recorded at least one point.
Minus: Charlie Lindgren carried a shutout well into the third period, but old pal Dmitry Orlov got the Sharks on the board with 7:02 left in the game. The Caps challenged for goaltender interference, but the challenge was unsuccessful. We suppose if someone had to score then Orlov was the best option, but it’s still a shame for Lindgren.
Capitals Player of the Game: Ryan Leonard, welcome to the NHL. He recorded four points in what was easily the best game of his young career. With two goals and two assists, he was the most productive Washington skater on the ice. His second goal was particularly stunning:
Per NHL PR, Leonard is the first Caps rookie to record a four-point game since Nicklas Backstrom in 2008. It’s fine, we’re fine, there’s just a LOT of dust in our eyes.
