The Montreal Canadiens have now been connected to one of the NHL’s top trade candidates.
During a recent episode of TSN Insider Trading, Pierre LeBrun reported that the Canadiens are one of the teams that have expressed interest in Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood.
“Among the teams that have shown interest: the Minnesota Wild. They are looking for a top-six upgrade, “LeBrun said. “They’ve checked in. I’m told Montreal and Dallas are also on a long list of teams that at the very least have kicked tires.”
With the Canucks currently being near the bottom of the NHL standings, Sherwood’s name has been picking up a lot of buzz in the rumor mill. It is understandable, as he is a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) having a strong year, making him a prime rental trade candidate. With the Canadiens dealing with injury trouble and needing help on offense, bringing in a player who provides a bit of everything like Sherwood would be great.Â
If the Canadiens landed Sherwood, he would give their top nine a boost and would also provide them with another option for both their power play and penalty kill. He would also make them a tougher team for opponents to go up against, as evidenced by his 110 hits in 27 games this season and his NHL record 462 hits last season.
Sherwood is also impressing offensively this season, recording 12 goals and 16 points in 27 games. This comes after he set career highs with 19 goals, 21 assists, and 40 points this past season with Vancouver.Â
