Kiefer Sherwood has been tied to several teams for a possible trade after the Vancouver Canucks announced last week that they are open to listening to offers for their players. The Dallas Stars have emerged as contenders after centerman Tyler Seguin suffered a season-ending injury.
Seguin left the Stars’ game against the New York Rangers on Tuesday following a brutal clash with Vladislav Gavrikov near the boards. The Stars announced that the 33-year-old tore his ACL and will require surgery.
Seguin’s injury is set to create a major hole in the Stars’ roster. He had scored 17 points in 27 games with 16:40 average ice time per game. Moreover, he had a big influence on their even strength game, recording a +10 plus-minus rating.
NHL insider Chris Johnston reported on TSN’s Insider Trading on Thursday that the Stars will be able to free up the maximum allowed $4 million cap space by putting Seguin on the Long Term Injured Reserve.
“With Seguin’s ACL injury, when they get the precise timeline, they’ll know whether they’re getting essentially $4 million in extra space that they can spend or up to almost $10 million if Seguin isn’t able to return at all this year,” Johnston reported.
Johsnton further added that the Stars are likely to pursue Sherwood, especially as he is earning only $1.5 million for the season, part of his two-year $3 million contract.
“And so, Pierre earlier this week reported they were in on Kiefer Sherwood, but the Vancouver Canucks. I would expect the Stars will be combing the market for forwards as we get closer to March 6 and will be quite aggressive ahead of that trade deadline.”
NHL insider notes Canucks unwilling to rush things with Sherwood
Chris Johnston’s TSN co-analyst and The Athletic writer Pierre LeBrun reported in his column on Friday morning that the Canucks are looking to hold onto Sherwood to get the maximum return.
“The Canucks don’t want to rush into anything unless they get an offer they’re very excited about. But the calls are coming, that’s for sure,” he wrote.
Sherwood has scored 12 goals and 16 points for the Canucks this season. He has been a bright spot in what has been a disappointing season so far from Vancouver.
