A report shed light on the pros and cons of the Detroit Red Wings calling up their goaltender Sebastian Cossa from the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.
The Detroit Red Wings had a lot of hope in Sebastian Cossa when they drafted him 15th overall in 2021. The six-foot-six goalie showed a lot of promise in his junior career, and looked poised to become a star in the NHL.
However, the following seasons were not easy for Cossa.
The goalie struggled, which forced the organization to limit his NHL opportunities to a single game.
With Trey Augustine still developing in the NCAA, there were doubts about Cossa’s future in Detroit.
Should The Wings Give Another NHL Opportunity To Sebastian Cossa?
Cossa is currently in a crucial stage of his development. At 23 years old, the 2025-26 season could make or break his career, especially after the acquisition of John Gibson in the last offseason.
He started well, with an 8-1-0 record, a 1.56 GAA and a .942 SV%, numbers that, on their own, warrant a call up.
In addition, the Wings have been struggling between the pipes so far this year.
If there’s a con to calling him up, it’s that it may be early to throw in the towel on either Talbot or Gibson. Even if more is expected from both of them, they have what it takes to bounce back.
But the solution in Detroit could be elsewhere than the goalie department.
