The Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday placed winger Joona Koppanen on waivers, meaning any team can claim him by 2 p.m. Saturday.
Koppanen has one point, an assist, in 10 NHL games this season. The 6-foot-5, 217-pound Finn has a goal and an assist in 16 games this season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Wednesday, Koppanen, 27, missed practice because of an unspecified illness. He did not accompany the club for two road games, Thursday’s win in Tampa and Sunday’s game in Dallas, apparently because of the same illness.
Putting Koppanan through waivers gives the Penguins some roster flexibility and some options. He can be assigned to WBS before Sunday’s game or in the coming days, as injured forwards Justin Brazeau and Noel Acciari have been practicing in full capacity.
Coach Dan Muse on Wednesday indicated that Brazeau and Acciari were close, although that evening general manager Kyle Dubas said the two were still a week to 10 days away from a return.
