The Washington Capitals will be without veteran defenseman John Carlson for a second straight game, Friday night. Carlson has an upper-body injury and did not play in the team’s 7-1 blowout win over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night.
Head coach Spencer Carbery ruled Carlson out during his pregame media availability and also revealed that rookie forward Justin Sourdif will be a game-time decision against the Anaheim Ducks — the team’s final game of their three-game road trip in California. Sourdif sat out against the Sharks with a lower-body injury.
“Carlson will not play, and Sourdif will be a game-time,” Carbery said.
Carbery mentioned after Wednesday’s game that neither injury was expected to keep the two players out long-term, and Carlson took warmups before being scratched for the contest. The 35-year-old rearguard has been a key part of Washington’s high-scoring defense corps this season, posting 23 points (6g, 17a) in 16 games.
Carlson is also averaging 22:52 in time on ice, behind only Jakob Chychrun (23:14) for most on the Capitals. He was replaced in the lineup by Declan Chisholm against the Sharks, and Chisholm recorded his second assist of the year.
Sourdif, 23, did not take warmups in San Jose after missing a few late shifts during the Capitals’ 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. In 27 games this season, Sourdif has recorded six points (3g, 3a). He was replaced against the Sharks by a returning Nic Dowd, who centered the club’s third line.

Logan Thompson will retake the Capitals’ net after Lindgren beat the Sharks on Wednesday. In Thompson’s last start, he made 24 saves on 25 shots faced against the Kings. Overall this season, Thompson is 12-6-1 with a 2.02 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.
Thompson is 3-2-1 in six career appearances against the Ducks with a 2.07 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage, and two shutouts.
The Ducks come into Friday night on the back of a 7-0 shutout loss to the Utah Mammoth. Both of the team’s top two netminders, Lukas Dostal and Petr Mrazek, are out injured. Ville Husso, who began the year with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls, will make his fourth start of the season.
