With Chicago’s goalie Laurent Brossoit recently activated from the IR, Edmonton could make a push to acquire the steady back-up for a reasonable price.
Goalie-deal could hinge of retaining salary
According to the Chicago Blackhawks, Brossoit is set to return from a lower body injury and will be assigned to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs on a conditioning assignment.
By all appearances, Edmonton cannot expect to qualify, and then win in the post-season with the current goalie tandem. At the very least, they’ll need a new back-up goaltender.
Even with their win last night against Seattle, where the Oilers scored nine goals, Calvin Pickard still allowed four goals against, for a save percentage of .875 on the game, and .851 SV% and 4.04 GAA on the season.
Brossoit is a definite upgrade on Pickard.
Granted, his $3.3M cap is problematic and if a deal is made, Chicago would have to retain at least 50% of his salary, in addition to a draft pick.
Brossoit, 32, in 2023-24 appeared in 23 regular-season games with the Winnipeg Jets, posting an elite record of 15-5-2 record, a 2.00 GAA and a .927 SV%.
In 140 career NHL regular-season games, including 28 with Edmonton where he began his NHL career, Laurent compiled a 64-46-13 record with a 2.64 GAA and a .911 SV%., again elite stats.
Though under contract with the Blackhawks, Brossoit has yet to play with the team, as he underwent meniscus surgery in August 2024, followed by another knee procedure, which effectively sidelined him for the entire 2024-25 campaign.
With the NHL holiday break approaching, activity on the trade-front will certainly increase, as teams will have a better picture of whether they’re sellers, or buyers.
