Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Victor Johansson was named to Sweden’s World Juniors team on Friday.
Here is the full roster, listed by Daily Faceoff’s Uffe Bodin:
Sweden’s #WJC roster has been presented by head coach Magnus Hävelid:
Johansson is The Leafs Nation’s 13th-ranked prospect within the organization. The 19-year-old was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Draft and boasts some long-term upside for the Maple Leafs. Johansson recorded seven goals and 39 points in 47 games with Leksands IF Jr. of the Swedish Junior League last season.
This season, Johanssson has played two games for Leksands in the Swedish Elite League, but has primarily suited up for Oskarshamn IK of the Swedish first division, where he’s recorded a goal and four points in 10 games.
Johansson is still so raw. As a pure defenseman, he covers the man well and is rarely out of position. He still needs to add pure muscle and do a better job at reading and receiving passes coming his way. From watching him in development camp, you saw a young kid who struggled to do much with the puck – like he was too nervous. Right now, it’s not as big of a deal, but his puck game is still not fully where it needs to be.
But at 18, that’s fine. There’s a long runway for a prospect who most didn’t expect to come close to touching the NHL. If he doesn’t make it, whatever. If he does, the Leafs can be happy they took a chance on a prospect most teams weren’t interested in.
Johansson elevated his offensive profile last season, and he’s added some much-needed physicality to his game. Here’s what The Leafs Nation’s Filipe Dimas wrote about Johansson this summer.
The biggest knock on his game thus far has been his reaction time with both receiving passes and making decisions with the puck. Ideally, those delayed responses leave his game as he gains experience and more confidence, where his instincts and rising hockey IQ will assist in making quick decisions rather than taking that extra half-second to make a decision, a half-second that can be exploited in U20 hockey, but more experienced veterans will pounce on at higher levels.
Johansson figures to be a key part of Sweden’s defence, and he’ll certainly be a player on Leafs fans’ radars throughout the tournament, where it’ll be compelling to see if he can take another leap or two in his game.
