Oilers forward Trent Frederic, who is playing in the first of an eight year contract he signed in the summer and only has two goals in 27 games, is speaking out amidst his struggles.

Last season, the Edmonton Oilers acquired forward Trent Frederic from the Boston Bruins at the Trade Deadline, and he would be part of the team that advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight year.

Oilers GM Stan Bowman then decided to keep him around for the long term, signing him to an eight year deal with an AAV (average annual value) of $3.85 million.

But so far through the first 27 games of the season, Frederic has only scored twice with zero assists, not at all the kind of production that was expected of him when he signed the contract.

Frederic recently spoke out about his offensive struggles and said that even though it’s frustrating, he’s more focused on helping the team succeed rather than individual stats.

All I care about is what my teammates think of me. I know they all probably like me as a guy. They probably want more from me as a player. So do I.

I just signed a contract that’s going to be my last one, probably. And I don’t really care about the individual stuff – I want a team to do well. That’s really all I care about.

The Oilers are going to need much more from Frederic before that contract starts to look like a massive overcommitment on Bowman’s part.

After signing his contract, Frederic said that playing in Edmonton at Rogers Place has been the highlight of his career.

I think I’ve said it before, playing in Edmonton and playing at Rogers Place as a hockey player, playing hockey is my No. 1 thing in life and that’s what I love to do and I am fortunate enough that I get to do it for a living and playing in front of all the fans in Edmonton and to play at Rogers Place and to see the buzz around the city.

Frederic was taken by the Bruins with the 29th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, and played his entire NHL career in a Bruins sweater before being traded to the Oilers in March.

He has 111 points (57G, 54A) in 365 career games.
