eiemsykJames van Riemsdyk’s four goals in five games prompts wonder about whether he’s about to become a primary source of the Detroit Red Wings’ secondary scoring.
Coach Todd McLellan would certainly like to see that happen on the team’s current six-game road trip. Detroit plays in Seattle tonight.
“His game is picking up,” McLellan said. “Obviously, he’s a crafty veteran. He gets moments, he gets situations. He has some poise with the puck that we’re hoping others will get eventually… And anybody that’s been in the league has a pretty good idea of what his toolbox looks like.”
Van Riemsdyk, 36, has been a consistent goal scorer throughout his lengthy NHL career, including last season when he scored 16 for Columbus. The Red Wings’ lack of secondary scoring is such an issue that van Riemsdyk’s five goals on the season ties him for fourth on the Red Wings. And his average playing time is under 12 minutes per game.
Given how dependent the Red Wings are for Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat to score goals, it will be interesting to see if McLellan gives van Riemsdyk a little time on ice to see if he can contribute even more.
