LOS ANGELES – It’s no secret that goals have been few and far between for the Los Angeles Kings. Through the first 27 games of the season the Kings are the fourth-worst team when it comes to goals per game at an average of 2.56 and fourth-worst in total points at 191.

But, if you were the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night, you would never believe those stats.

The Kings stomped the Blackhawks 6-0 at Crypto.com Arena in a dominant display that saw 12 different Kings get involved in scoring. It was the most goals the Kings had scored in regulation all season and the most since a 6-5 win over the Seattle Kraken April 15 of last season. Brandt Clarke stole the show with two of those goals, but it was the line of Phillip Danault, Warren Foegele and Trevor Moore that got things started in the second period with a goal by Foegele.

“Phil’s [line] getting that first one… was a sigh relief. Like, ‘we got the lead here. Let’s just play now.’ And that’s what happened,” Clarke said.

While each of the six goals the Kings knocked in sent their home crowd roaring, the last one of the night was the kind of goal the Los Angeles faithful hadn’t seen live with their eyes before.

With 9:34 remaining in the game, Alex Turcotte drove in hard toward the Chicago goal and shot. Blackhawks goalie Spencer Knight may have blocked the shot at first, but it deflected straight into the skates of Turcotte as he begin to move away and slipped straight into the goal to put the Kings up 6-0. It was Turcotte’s second goal of the season and first at home.

“It’s been forever,” Turcotte said with a laugh. “It’s definitely a relief to just have that over with and hopefully the flood gates open and I put it in more consistently.”

The frustration that builds up when shots aren’t finding the net and losses begin to rack up is the kind of thing that becomes caustic to a regular season. The Kings aren’t in that territory yet with a 13-8-7 record, but still, a night like Saturday can be the kind of game that galvanizes a team and let’s them relax a little knowing they’ve gotten the monkey off their backs when it comes to scoring. That sense of ease could help them along and put an end to their tough stretch where they’d lost six of their last eight heading into Saturday.

“It’s supposed to be fun, and sometimes you can lose sight of that when it’s not going your way,” Turcotte said. “Just having the right mindset and being positive and having fun out there, it’s all mindset. And I think this proves that if you stick with it, good things can happen.”
