The Canadiens hung on to record a 2-1 shootout victory in Toronto on Saturday night to pull to within one-point o f division leaders Tampa Bay and Boston. The Blues are also coming off a Saturday win, claiming a 2-1 victory in Ottawa that put the brakes on a three-game road losing streak.
The Canadiens have vaulted to -145 favourites on Sunday’s NHL odds. The Blues trail as +118 underdogs, and the total is listed at 6.
Blues vs. Canadiens NHL Betting Odds
These clubs split a pair of games last season, with the home team emerging victorious in each, including a 5-2 Canadiens early in the campaign. Overall, the Blues have taken two of three from the Canadiens, but the Habs have been steady at home, topping St. Louis in four of five dates since 2019. Recent clashes between these clubs have not been close, with each of their past four tilts getting settled by a margin of three or more goals. That has fueled a steady 6-0 run for the OVER in totals betting. However, both these clubs have regularly engaged in lows-scoring affairs of late.
With Saturday’s 2-1 win, the Habs have now seen the total top 5 in just two of their past five contests after seeing at least six total goals get scored in 13 of their previous 14 outings. The Blues have also engaged in tight contests, with total goals going OVER 5.0 in just two of their past 11 dates. That has paid big dividends for totals bettors taking the UNDER, which has gone 10-1 in St. Louis’ past 11. However, a lack of production on the road from Blues shooters has helped fuel that trend, scoring just two goals in each of their past seven away dates while losing five times. For the Canadiens, their newfound stinginess comes as a relief to their struggling goaltenders, who still remain mired near the bottom of the NHL stats with a 3.44 goals against average.
St. Louis Blues
Blues netminder Joel Hofer stole the win for the club on Saturday night in Ottawa, turning aside 41 of 42 shots, the highest total the club has faced this season. But with the club playing on back-to-back nights, Jordan Binnington is likely to get the call on Sunday. Binnington was lit up for five goals on 27 shots in Thursday’s 5-2 loss in Boston, extending his current losing strike to two games and has backstopped the club to victory in just one of his past six starts on the road. Jake Neighbours handled all the scoring for the Blues on Saturday, potting a pair of goals to halt an eight-game scoring drought. With eight goals and 12 points in 17 games, the 23-year-old winger is on pace for a personal best season, but has seen his goals come in bunches, with three multi-goal performances so far this season.
Robert Thomas continues to lead the club with 17 points, but has picked up just one goal and one helper over his nine road appearances, and potted just one goal in his past 10 overall. The team’s leading goal scorer Jordan Kyrou was forced to leave Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury and his status for Sunday is uncertain.
Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens manage to outshoot the Maple Leafs by a wide 34-23 margin on Saturday but needed a shootout to settle things for the second time in as many games. While the boost in shots is welcome, it has yet to lift the Habs out of a scoring slump that has produced just two total goals at even strength over their past four games. Cole Caufield snapped a three-game scoring drought on Saturday with his 15th goal of the season but has bulged the twine just twice in his past 12 games including just a single marker in his past seven home appearances. Juraj Slafkovsky set up Caufield’s power play goal to extend his points streak to five games and is a lucrative +325 bet on the NHL player props to pick up at least a point with the extra man for a fourth straight game on Sunday night.
