The Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers are in trade talks surrounding goaltender Tristan Jarry. And while the Oilers would love to get Jarry in their crease, it’s going to be a very complicated deal to complete.
Penguins’ president Kyle Dubas has reportedly told the Oilers he’s not interested in retaining any of Jarry’s remaining salary, which for a cash-strapped Oilers’ brass, is tough news to hear. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman touched on these trade talks during Saturday night’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast and had this to say:
Elliotte Friedman: There’s been a lot of noise around Tristan Jarry the last 24-48 hours; I do think there’s legitimate Edmonton interest; might not be possible; Pittsburgh has indicated it will not retain [salary] – Saturday Headlines (12/6)
Friedman went on to mention Stuart Skinner would not be a part of this trade, as Edmonton would like to pair Jarry and Skinner together.Â
As for the Penguins’ netminder, Jarry has two seasons left on his contract at $5.3 million AAV. He does own a 12-team no-trade clause, however, he has a history of playing junior in Edmonton, knows the city well, and is apparently open to the move if it eventually becomes presented to him.Â
So far this season, Jarry’s had a bounce-back season, posting a 9-2-0 record, along with a 2.61 GAA and .913 save percentage. With the Penguins in the playoff hunt, it will be interesting to see if Dubas does pull the trigger, even with the organization having two other capable goaltenders.
As for the Oilers, they don’t have a ton of offer, and will need to somehow create cap space to have over $5 million to fit Jarry within their finances. Andrew Mangiapane is an interesting trade candidate who could be asked to waive his no-trade clause.
Keep an eye on these two teams, the trade talks are starting to heat up in a major way.
