The Calgary Flames have some big potential trade candidates that teams are keeping an eye on—Rasmus Andersson, Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman. Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars have a big hole to fill — both on the ice, and most likely in cap space — with the season-ending ACL injury to Tyler Seguin.
We’ve already heard from one insider that the Stars will be even ‘more aggressive’ now on the trade market than they normally are. And according to another, they could do a little one-stop shopping in Calgary, and fill all their needs in one blockbuster deal.
Insider David Pagnotta appeared on The Sheet with Jeff Marek, and suggested that with their pending newfound $9.85 million in cap room (if they ultimately, as expected, place Seguin on Season-Ending LTIR), Dallas could try to land not one, but two Flames trade pieces.
It wouldn’t shock me now if they do shut down (Seguin) for the regular season and playoffs and (with) that (cap) space, could we see an Andersson/Blake Coleman combo? I would be very curious, because the Stars are not afraid to go and take a big swing here, and address multiple areas like they did last season with San Jose. Remember, they got (Mikael) Granlund and (Cody) Ceci in that one deal. I could certainly see something happening along those lines here, and Calgary certainly makes a lot of sense.
Both Andersson & Coleman are great fits for Dallas
Nabbing Andersson & Coleman would be an even more significant splash than the Granlund/Ceci combo was last year. Both players do certainly sound like fits in Dallas. Andersson has already been linked to them as one of the two teams the pending UFA was thought to be willing to sign an extension with (along with the Vegas Golden Knights).
Andersson has done nothing but boost his trade value exponentially in recent weeks, as he has racked up 14 points in his last 11 games. Overall, he has 20 points and 59 blocked shots in 30 games, while logging 24:10 average ice time.
As for Coleman, he is from nearby Plano, Texas, and as a solid two-way forward, would be an ideal replacement for Seguin. He would bring the leadership and locker room presence, as well as the on-ice qualities that they’d be missing with Seguin out. Coleman has a more modest output over the season, with 12 points, but he is also a +7, and has handed out 74 hits in 30 games.
Either way, both the Flames and the Stars will be two of the busiest teams on the trade market over the next few months, for very different reasons.
