The Edmonton Oilers are being connected to multiple goalie trade targets this week, but the best fit for their team looks like Jordan Binnington.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has previously named the Penguins and Blues as top trade partners for Edmonton in the goalie department. The top options would be Tristan Jarry or Jordan Binnington, and the latter would be a much better fit.

Edmonton Oilers best fit for a new goaltender would be Jordan Binnington

To address the uncertainty in their net and create some confidence for the upcoming playoffs, the Oilers need someone who’s a proven championship-calibre goaltender. The 32-year old Cup Champ Binnington has that experience.

It’s no secret that Binnington is having a tough season this year, posting a lowly .874 save percentage in 19 games. However, there’s some belief he could turn it around quickly in Edmonton – and it’s backed by stats.

According to goalie analyst Steve Valiquette with Clear Sight Analytics, Binnington’s qualities as a goaltender would directly match up with Edmonton’s weaknesses defensively. The Oilers tend to give up more breakaway and rebound chances, two areas that Binnington excels in.

As per Clear Sight Analytics’ model, Binnington would have saved the Oilers 16 more goals against this season than Skinner.

That could be the difference between being in a wild card spot like the Oilers are, or leading the division entirely.

While there’s is risk in acquiring Binnington with his stats so poor this year, it could also be a good buy-low opportunity for the Oilers. Fitting in his $6M salary would be a challenge, but it’s not an impossible task.

If Oilers pro scouts agree that Binnington’s numbers would significantly improve in Edmonton, he’s the only trade candidate who could bring championship experience and confidence to their crease this playoffs.
