The Kraken numbers don’t add up for success as they prepare to face the Minnesota Wild on Monday night. Seattle is 1-and-5 all-time at Climate Pledge Arena against the squad from St. Paul.

Toss in the fact that the two Seattle goaltenders, Joey Daccord (3.89 goals against average, .858 save percentage) and Philipp Grubauer (2.95, .894), both have subpar numbers against the Wild, and the challenge becomes even greater.

Daccord hasn’t looked himself lately and one would expect Grubi to get the start.

The Kraken will face one of the NHL’s elite talents in winger Kirill Kaprizov. The 28-year-old Russian is tied for 17th in league scoring with 32 points and is worth the price of admission. He’s relentless in the offensive zone and will effectively fire pucks from anywhere and everywhere. About 1 in 5 of his shots go in.

Seattle fans will likely see him skating on the top line with rookie and fellow Russian Danila Yurov and undersized, veteran Norwegian playmaker Mats Zuccarello. “Zook” missed half the team’s games at the start of the season due to injury and Yurov missed a couple recently.

Matt Boldy is a solid option on the right side of the 2nd line. He’s right behind Kaprizov with 31 points this season and Kraken fans will likely see him again in February playing for Team USA at the Winter Olympics.

Seattle needs to overcome these challenges. They’re in the midst of a five game skid (0-4-and-1) and have given up 17 goals over their last three games. Not a recipe for success when at the other end you’re next-to-last in the NHL in goals-for per game at 2.54. Minnesota is 26th at 2.69.

The Kraken don’t have veteran forward Jaden Schwartz or a third goalie option in Matt Murray, both due to injury. The Wild have three forwards on injured reserve: Marcus Foligno, Marco Rossi, and Vinnie Hinostroza.

The Wild have lost two games in a row, including a 4-2 setback against the Canucks on Saturday night, and sit in third place in the Central Division with 35 points. The Kraken are 6th in the Pacific Division with 28 points, three back of the second Western Conference wild card spot.
