The Soo Greyhounds have added another key piece to their blue line as they look to move up the standings and into contention when they acquired veteran defenseman Lukas Fischer from the Sarnia Sting.

The Greyhounds shipped out defenseman Hunter Solomon and five draft picks including a 2026 second-rounder previously belonging to Kingston.

Fischer was a second-round selection by the St. Louis Blues in the 2024 NHL Draft. He is in the midst of a career year with 18 points through his first 26 games for the Sting. He had 37 points last season and appeared in three AHL games with the Springfield Thunderbirds at the end of the season.

Sarnia is turning its eyes toward the future as they’ve struggled mightily this season and even made a coaching change just weeks ago. By sending out Fischer, they get a solid 2007-born defenseman in Solomon and the litany of draft picks to use on future assets.

Fischer is a dual U.S.-Czech citizen who grew up in Michigan and is the son of former NHL defenseman Jiri Fischer. He was a CHL Top Prospects Game selection two years ago.

Adding Fischer gives the Greyhounds six NHL Draft picks on their roster led by last year’s fifth overall pick of the Nashville Predators Brady Martin. The Soo had no drafted prospects on their blue line at this point, though have one of the 2026 NHL Draft’s top-rated blueliners in Chase Reid.

That’s a big benefit to adding Fischer. Reid eats a ton of minutes for the Greyhounds, but now they have another steady, reliable veteran player that they can put into a multitude of situations. Reid is having a spectacular season, but now he won’t have to quite do it all as much as he has.

The Greyhounds currently sit third in the West Division, fifth in the Western Conference and eighth overall in the OHL. They have been among the highest-scoring teams in the OHL, tied for third among all teams with 114 total goals. They haven’t been too shabby in goal prevention either, ranking sixth in fewest goals allowed in the OHL this season.

The overall results should theoretically be better than they have been and adding a player like Fischer might help them get shored up sooner than later as they look to put more pressure on the top teams in the league.

The Greyhounds will meet the Kitchener Rangers Thursday night on home ice right here on FloHockey.
